University Medical Centre Ljubljana is a public healthcare institution providing secondary and tertiary healthcare services, as well as educational and research activities, and, in exceptional cases, primary healthcare. At the secondary level, it includes diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation, and nursing care, primarily for the Ljubljana region and beyond. At the tertiary level, it develops specialised services, introduces new methods, shapes medical doctrine, and delivers the most complex treatments. In addition, it participates in undergraduate and postgraduate education and research programmes, trains professionals, and contributes to the transfer of knowledge within the healthcare system.

Main areas of expertise include secondary and tertiary healthcare services (diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation, and nursing care), development of advanced medical methods and highly specialised treatments, as well as education and training of healthcare professionals and clinical research with knowledge transfer.

The centre has extensive experience in healthcare delivery at secondary and tertiary levels, supported by the continuous development of clinical, organisational and digital processes. It is actively engaged in the modernisation of healthcare services, including the gradual adoption of digital solutions and data-driven approaches. Particular attention is given to information security, risk management and organisational resilience, in line with national and EU regulatory frameworks.

University Medical Centre Ljubljana acts as the largest national reference and teaching hospital, providing a key pilot environment for validating advanced cybersecurity, resilience and compliance solutions in healthcare.

It participates in several project activities across multiple work packages, without acting as a lead of any specific WP. Its involvement includes contributions to project management and reporting processes, participation in activities related to cybersecurity maturity assessment and technical alignment, and engagement in pilot preparation and implementation. As a pilot user, it supports the validation of solutions in a real hospital environment, contributes to monitoring and evaluation activities, and takes part in training, awareness and dissemination actions.

University Medical Centre Ljubljana provides a real clinical environment for testing and validation of solutions, enabling their evaluation in practice and offering feedback on usability, effectiveness and potential transferability to other healthcare organisations.

It brings access to a large-scale clinical environment, including complex hospital IT/OT/IoMT infrastructure, enabling the testing and validation of solutions in real operational conditions. It contributes domain knowledge in healthcare processes, clinical workflows and organisational practices, as well as experience in information security and regulatory compliance, and provides a relevant setting for training, awareness activities and evaluation of solution usability in a real-world healthcare context.

ShieldHealthAdria is important as it strengthens cyber resilience of healthcare organisations in the Adriatic region through comprehensive security assessments, alignment with EU regulatory frameworks (e.g. NIS2, GDPR), and deployment of modular cybersecurity solutions. By enabling real-time monitoring and early detection of incidents, it contributes to improved protection of critical healthcare infrastructure and sensitive patient data, while promoting cross-border cooperation and capacity building.

The project is expected to enhance cybersecurity capabilities, including faster detection and response to incidents, improved system resilience and regulatory compliance. Healthcare professionals will benefit from increased awareness and training, while organisations gain better visibility over their IT environment. Ultimately, patients benefit from more secure and reliable healthcare services, ensuring the protection of their sensitive data and continuity of care.
